DIY Homemade Lip Treatment for Healthy and Irresistable Lips

I went out for lunch with one of my girl friend the other day and she commented that I have chapped lips. I immediately pulled out my lip balm to rescue my dry lips. Then she commented that I had it all wrong and just applying lip balm to the dry lips is not enough. She said lips are like our skin, it needs to be pampered. It needs to be exfoliated, masked and moisturised frequently. I came home and frantically search for the best lips regime for my poor chapped lips.

STEP 1 -  Cleanse
Similar to any other facial regime, it always starts with cleaning. I used a cotton wool and dabbed it in olive oil to remove my lipsticks. (I use olive oil as my makeup remover and it has been serving me very well). Next, I used a soft towel and soaked it in warm water and gently pat on my lips to make sure my lips are clean.

STEP 2 - Exfoliate
There are a few ways to exfoliate, like going over your lips gently with a toothbrush or a damp washcloth. But I was thinking of giving my lips a royal treatment so I decided to make a homemade sugar scrub to remove the dead skins.

Sugar Scrub recipe
Ingredients :
- 1 tsp of organic raw brown sugar (or any sugar you can find in your kitchen)
- 1 tsp of organic coconut oil
Instructions:
- Mix both ingredients together and apply it to your lips. Let it sits there for a few minutes so that the coconut oil can moisturise and soften the dead skin. Then, use your index finger to scrub your lips in a circular motion. Rinse the scrub and your lips and let it rest for a few minutes.

STEP 3 - Mask
Applying a mask to the lips is crucial after exfoliating because it helps to moisturize, detoxify, increase circulation and replenish nutrients. But above all, they add an extra dimension to the skin-care routine, and they are truly pampering. So why not?

(This is a super mask, it can be applied on your face and lips too!)
Ingredients:
- 1  1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 3 tsp milk
(You can adjust the amount of milk to make the paste more or less thick, but make sure it’s a firm  paste that will stick to your face.  )
Instructions:
- Mix both ingredients in a bowl and apply it to your face and lips.
-Wash it off after 20 minutes.

STEP 4 - Moisturise

The final step is to treat that fresh, clean lips to a nice moisturizing treatment. Since I am going all out to pamper my neglected lips, I decided to make my own lip balm.

Coconut oil with Vitamin E lip balm recipe
Ingredients:
-1 tbsp organic coconut oil
-1/4 tsp vitamin E oil
Instructions:
Mix all the ingredients together and pour it into a clean lip gloss container, lip balm or a small roll on container.

Apply lip balm regularly and stay hydrated to maintain healthy irresistible lips.
Keep smiling =D

DIY Homemade gel air freshener

I love having my house smelling nice and fragrant but this love interest comes with a cost. Every now and then I have to replace the air fresheners with new ones and they cost a hole in my pocket. My husband often complaints that it is unnecessary and a waste of money.
Since I am hooked to my new found hobby to make my own natural products, I was thinking why not make my own air freshener. I found a few recipes but I thought I will start with the easiest one - the homemade gel air freshener.

Duration : 10 minutes
Resting time : 3 hours or more

Ingredients
  • 1 packet of the gelatine
  • 2 cups of water (1 cup to go with the gelatine on the stove and another cup at room temperature)
  • 2 tablespoons of salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon of vodka
  • 1/2 tablespoon of lavender oil
  • Fresh rosemary for decoration (Optional)
  • Recycled yogurt cups / any container of your choice
  • Colouring (Optional - I didn't put any colouring as I prefer it natural)

Instructions
1.Pour 1 cup of the water into a pot and mix it with the gelatine and bring it to boil. Stir the liquid until the gelatine dissolved. Turn off the fire and let it cool down.
2.Next mix the vodka and the lavender oil in a small cup. Leave it aside.
3.Arranged the recycled yogurt cups on the kitchen table and decorate it with the fresh rosemary leaves and flowers.
4.Pour another cup of water into a small jug. Add 2 tablespoons of salt into the water and mix in the lavender oil and vodka that was sitting in the small cup. You can add colouring into the cup but I like it natural. Then, mix the gelatine liquid into the jug. Stir the mixture into the cup and pour it evenly into the yogurt cups.
5. Put it aside and let the gelatine sets. It may takes a few hours.

Once it is set, just decorate these cups around your house. It smells so good and it doesn't cost you a dime. I even put one in my car.

DIY Spinach pasta

I love making pasta and it is so simple to make. Last weekend, I made a batch of spinach pasta and it is so good so I thought of sharing this recipe with you. I think this recipe is good for kids that refused to eat their vegetables. You won't even notice the difference especially when you mixed it with the white or red sauce.  You can make a big batch and store it in the freezer.  It can last at least a month. When you want to cook your frozen pasta, it can go straight from the freezer into the boiling water.
Let's get cooking!

Cooking Time:
About 1 hour (inclusive 30 minutes resting time)

Ingredients:
- 1 cube of the frozen spinach (It is about 75 grams of chopped spinach)
- 2 cups of plain flour
- 1 cup of hot water
- Extra flour for kneading
- 1 egg

Instructions:

Making the perfect dough
-Mix all the ingredients in your food processor and whizz the mixture until it looks like one big, smooth lump of dough. (Add more flour if required to achieve the look shown in the following diagrams.)
-Dust your work surface with some flour and tip the mixture on to your work surface. You need to knead and work it with your hands to develop the gluten in the flour, otherwise your pasta will be flabby and soft when you cook it, instead of springy and al dente.
-Then all you need to do is wrap it in a cling film and put it in the fridge to rest for at least half an hour before you use it.

Rolling the perfect pasta
-Remove the dough from the fridge and pinch a lump from the dough (the size of a large lemon) and press it out flat with your fingertips.
-Push it through the pasta maker's roller  and repeat this process for about five to six times while gradually adjusting the pasta machine's thickness to the level you desire )
-Once you are happy with the pasta dough consistency, switch the setting on your pasta machine from the pasta roller to the pasta cutter.
-Slide the pasta sheet through the cutter.
-Dust some flour lightly on your freshly made pasta. Pack and freeze it in the freezer.
(Repeat these steps with the rest of the dough)

Buon appetito!

A spoonful of honey a day keeps the extra weight away

Honey contains nutrients that helps people in their efforts to lose weight because our body utilises nutrients to dissolve fats and cholesterol. Although honey contains sugar, but unlike refined sugar, honey contains minerals such as iron, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc and calcium. It also contains good source of vitamins that include folic acid, niacin, riboflavin, Vitamin C, and Vitamin B6. It reduces risk of cardiovascular disorders and it helps in weight loss. The research study suggests that consumption of honey may help in reducing cholesterol as compared to sugar. It also leads to lower increase in plasma glucose levels. Honey also improves your digestion, which can help in reducing static weight in your digestive system. Therefore, honey can be consumed after dinner, particularly after eating a large meal.

What is the honey diet?
Founder of the honey diet, Mike McInnes, discovered that athletes who ate foods rich in fructose ,such as honey, burnt a lot more fats and had increased stamina levels as well. Honey acts as a fuel to make the liver produce glucose. This glucose keeps the brain sugar levels high and forces it to release fat burning hormones.

To benefit from the honey diet, simply replace your sugar intake with honey. In addition to that you should consume three spoonfuls of honey with warm water every night before bed and combine this routine with an exercise regime, you will notice a sizeable drop in your weight. The study showed that the mechanism in the brain that caused the sugar craving could be shut down completely with this honey routine.

Daily routine that can assist in weight loss with Honey Diet

Hibernation Diet
According to British pharmacist Mike McInnes and his son Stuart, a nutritionist, when the liver is properly fueled with glycogen in the evening, recovery hormones can do their job during sleep - thereby speeding up metabolism and reducing fat-encouraging stress hormones. Woman's Day magazine notes that, if you suffer from any of the following symptoms, your liver may not be properly primed with glycogen:
  • Acid reflux
  • Disrupted sleep
  • Waking to urinate
  • Dry throat in the morning
  • Night cramps and/or sweats
  • Early morning nausea and weakness
  • Exhausted upon waking
The Hibernation Diet recommends ingesting a spoonful or two of pure honey before bedtime to 'rev' up fat utilization, soothe stress response and support night time muscle and tissue regeneration.

Replace all sugar with honey
Honey is a good substitute of sugar. It can be used in different beverages as mentioned in the following.

  • Honey and Warm Water
Normally, fat remains as an unused resource in the body, adding bulk and weight, but it is believed that honey has the ability to mobilize this stored fat. When this fat is burnt to provide energy for your daily activities, you will see a gradual decrease in weight and a relief from the problems of obesity.
Honey has also been shown to positively increase the levels of “good” cholesterol in the body, and also reduces cardiovascular strain, which means you can lead a more active, healthy life, which will further promote your weight loss programs, since you won’t be worried as much about artherosclerosis, or the risk of heart attacks or strokes when going for a morning run! Research suggests that drinking honey (about one tablespoon daily), with an equal amount of warm water can stimulate this beneficial process.

  • Honey and Lemon Juice
Honey can also help in weight loss when consumed with warm water and lemon juice. Many people drink this formula as a start to their day as a way of stimulating weight loss. Honey is packed with 22 amino acids and a number of valuable vitamins and minerals, many of which benefit the body’s metabolism. By regulating the function of the metabolism, food is utilized properly, fat is converted into usable energy, and overall health is improved. The lemon juice in this mixture also is loaded with Vitamin-C (also known as ascorbic acid), which increases liver function and fat metabolism. Furthermore, lemon juice increases the function of glutathione, which is a key antioxidant for detoxification and quick slimming.
Combining the weight loss powers of lemon juice with the metabolism-stimulating effects of honey, this elixir, if drunk once a day, can give you some seriously attractive results.

  • Gingered honey
Ginger tea in itself is a tremendous metabolism booster, but when combined with honey, it offers a potent elixir for efficient digestion. Drinking a glass of the tea with a teaspoon of honey twenty minutes before a meal will encourage stable blood sugar, optimum digestion and, in turn, favourable calorie utilization and fat burning.
To make the tea, peel and grate a one inch chunk of fresh, organic ginger and simmer (covered) in two cups of water. Transfer to a mug and let cool until just warm. Dissolve one teaspoon of honey into the brew and drink promptly. Make sure to consume the grated ginger too for utmost benefit.

  • Honey and cinnamon
As simple as it may sound, drinking a mug of warm cinnamon tea with honey is one of the best ways to balance blood sugar, spur metabolism and shed excess weight. Since abdominal fat is sensitive to the compounds in cinnamon, it's an ideal choice if you need to slim down in this region. To make the tea, dissolve half a teaspoon of organic, ground cinnamon in a cup of boiling water. Cover and let steep for 15 minutes. Next, stir in one teaspoon of honey and enjoy immediately. For optimal results, practice this habit first thing in the morning and away from food.

Among other food items, it can be used in desserts, pancakes instead of sugar. One may add honey to oatmeal, peanut butter sandwich for additional nutrients, good taste and a lower risk of weight gain.

Skip junk food
Junk foods are processed food that contains empty calories. To fully benefit from the honey diet, stop eating junk food.

Opt for unrefined carb
Refined white flour in white pasta and white rice may cause a spike in blood sugar levels. Opt for wholemeal flour instead as they are good for digestion and will keep you fuller for a longer time.

Consume Proteins
Keep your proteins lean but make sure you consume proteins with every meal as it will keep you full and also avoid a blood sugar rise that leads to cravings.

Be careful with your fruits
Fruits are a convenient option while dieting but remember that most fruits are high in sugar levels and can hamper your honey diet. Either reduce your fruit intake or opt for low-carb fruits like berries and rhubarb.

No potatoes
Any form of potato can cause your body's insulin level to rise. The honey diet requires you to avoid eating potatoes.

Many people stop eating to reduce their weight, but this is a potentially dangerous practice. If you don’t eat enough food, which is the primary way of acquiring calories, vitamins, minerals, and fiber, your immune system will weaken.
Your weight loss program should focus on reducing the intake of calories, rather than stopping the intake of calories. Furthermore, you should also increase your daily elimination of calories through regular exercise.

Notes when using honey
Do not mix honey with hot boiling water or cook honey at high temperatures, because improper heat will cause nutrients in honey to be severely damaged, and catalyst in it be lost.
When applying honey to lose weight, you absolutely should not stop eating foods to reduce weight. If you do not eat well (including energy, vitamins, minerals, fibre) your immune system will become weak and lose weight unsuccessful.

Although honey is an astoundingly versatile and beneficial food, it's important to use discrimination when purchasing. Use only the highest quality honey - namely, one that is organic and raw with honeycomb, royal jelly, bee pollen and propolis included. Manuka honey is another excellent option, as it boasts remarkable healing properties.

Knitting with DIY knitting wheel

I have to warn you that this is very addictive. I tried fingerknitting and armknitting but nothing compare to this one. I first found out about this technique using a toiletroll. But, I find that the toilet roll is too small. Then I started to look for something bigger around the house. Then I saw an empty Sangenic cassette lying in my 'Recycled DIY' box. It was a perfect size!
This knitting wheel knitting is super easy and fun.
Let's have some fun!

Crafting Time:
- 5 minutes to make the knitting wheel
-15minutes to make the flower loom
- 1 hour or less to make the scarf
- 5 minutes to sew the flower loom onto the scarf
Ingredients:
- An empty Sangenic cassette (or anything with a round shape)
- Ice cream sticks
- Scissors
- sticky tape
- Yarn
- Thread and Needle

Instructions:
The following diagrams will show you how.
Note: Make sure the sticks are in odd number.
Use 2 balls of yarn and make a 'zig-zag' movement around the ice cream sticks until each stick has 4 yarns as shown in the last diagram.
Pick the bottom 2 loops and place it over the ice-cream stick. Repeat this step with the rest of the sticks until all sticks has only two yarns.
Repeat the 'zig-zag' movement again until all sticks have 4 loops in your ice cream stick. Then, pick the bottom 2 loops and place it over the ice-cream stick and repeat this step for all the sticks. Repeat these 2 steps until your desire length.
When you are happy with the scarf length,go ahead and knit the first two sticks.  *Then, take the loop from the last stick you just knitted and place it on the first stick you already knitted next to it.  Now that stick has two loops on it, so knit it again and then your sticks.  Move that remaining loop to the next stick in the direction you are moving to bind off.  Now, move your working yarn so you are ready to knit the stick next to that one, and go ahead and knit it
.*  Repeat from * to * until …you end up with only two loops remaining on one stick.  Knit that stitch, cut your yarn, remove the remaining loop from your knitter.
Pull your yarn tail up tight through that loop. Repeat the same step with the other end of the yarn. Weave in the ends, and you’ve got yourself a scarf. Then sew the flowerloom

DIY Natural Chocolate Mint toothpaste

Yes and Amen! All natural chocolate mint toothpaste.
You can now make chocolate mint toothpaste with the ingredients you can easily find in your pantry. It is all natural and good for your teeth and gum. For all the chocolate lovers out there , you can now wake up and sleep with this beautiful fresh peppermint and chocolate aroma in your mouth. It is so refreshing, calming and good for your teeth.

I decided to make my own toothpaste not because it is a chocolate mint toothpaste but I was shocked by the articles about the commercial toothpaste.  (Toxic Toothpaste , 6 Ingredients to avoid, fluoride in toothpaste) I am not a chemist or a researcher so I can't conclude whether these commercial toothpastes are harmful. But if I have a choice why not make my own toothpaste where it contains only nature’s goodness and is free from additives and nasty chemicals.

The ingredients:
Coconut oil
Coconut oil contains 50% Lauric Acid. It is very well known for its antimicrobial actions; it inhibits Strep mutans that are the primary bacteria that cause tooth decay. With that in mind, it should be no surprise that recent studies have shown the benefit of coconut oil in the prevention of tooth decay and plaque.
Cocao powder
Fluoride is a toxic industrial waste product that is a poison to your body even in trace amounts and it is used widely as the main active ingredient in toothpaste due to its ability to fight cavities. A recent study presented at the American Dental Association (ADA) 2013 Annual Session pitted fluoride toothpaste against a new toothpaste that contains the naturally-occurring cacao extract theobromine. According to this article, Sadeghpour and Carey found that theobromine protected teeth from decay better than fluoride. Sadeghpour maintains that theobromine offers consumers a safe, effective alternative to fluoride. He concluded, “If there is better way to do something that is nontoxic and more effective, why wouldn’t you choose that alternative.”
Polyphenols! Yes, these unique plant nutrients play a role in the prevention of cavities because of their ability to fight bacteria.  Cocoa polyphenols reduce the formation of acid from Streptococcus and S. sanguinis bacteria – the bad boy bacteria that produce caustic acid that poke holes in your teeth. Now to be clear, we’re talking cocoa powder NOT a sugary chocolate bar here . Cacao bean extract was given to rats that were infected with streptococci bacteria. Those rats that drank the cocoa extract had a significantly reduced rate of growth of streptococci bacteria in the mouth and far fewer cavities.
Studies in England and Japan have proved that chocolate is effective at fighting cavities and dental plaque in the mouth. According to the research, chocolate is better at this than fluoride — and  a much safer alternative. Compounds in the cocoa bean husk have antibacterial agents that help fight plaque in your mouth. Chocolate is rich in antioxidants and has many other amazing health benefits.
Baking Soda
It is also known as sodium bicarbonate and is composed of a chemical compound that makes it a great mild abrasive. Brushing with baking soda helps dislodge plaque built up on the teeth. Many foods and beverages such as tea, coffee, soda and red wine all cause staining of the teeth. In addition, plaque accumulates and causes additional yellowish discoloration. Baking soda is effective for both concerns and has a bleach-like action resulting in effective whitening of teeth. Plaque contributes to dental decay and cavity formation and must be removed on a regular basis. Although reported to be safe, effective and inexpensive, baking soda use for brushing your teeth is not without risks. The abrasive properties of baking soda can cause excessive wear and damage to the enamel of your teeth. Therefore, baking soda should be used in moderation.
Sea Salt
A few of many trace elements and minerals found in sea salt are calcium, magnesium, silicon, phosphorus, sodium, nickel, and iron. These nutrients strengthen your gums, protect teeth against tarter and rid your bad breath. It may even whiten your teeth over time. Sea salt is high in iodine which has antibacterial properties and helps neutralize acids in the mouth. Salt makes you salivate, and your saliva creates an antibacterial barrier that protects your enamel. (If you are not comfortable with baking soda, you can replace baking soda with sea salt)
Stevia Powder
Stevia is a small shrub like perennial plant which belongs to the sunflower (Asteraceae) family. It is also known as Eupatorium rebaudianum, sweetleaf, honeyleaf and sugarleaf, and sweet herb of Paraguay. The leaves of Stevia are a source of natural zero-calorie sweetener which is considered sweeter than sugar (sucrose).
A number of studies show that Stevia can be beneficial in the treatment of many health conditions. It contains antibacterial properties that help with gingivitis, cavities, tooth decay and mouth sores. It may suppress the development and reproduction of infectious organisms in the gums and teeth, inhibit the growth of plaque and may improve overall oral health.
Peppermint essential oil (Optional - Other type of essential oil can be used too)
Peppermint oil is very helpful as an aid for digestion. People often put a few drops of peppermint oil in a glass of water and drink it after their meal for its beneficial digestive properties. It is carminative and therefore helps in removing excess gas. Peppermint oil is also a good tonic for those who have a low appetite, and it helps treating motion sickness, nausea and upset stomachs. Other than all the great benefits, chocolate always goes well with mint. (Yum!)

Ingredients
-1 tablespoons baking soda (If you want to remove coffee stain on your teeth, use 2 tablespoons  and omit sea salt )
-1 tablespoons salt
-4 tablespoons coconut oil
-6 drops peppermint essential oil
-2 teaspoons organic cacao powder

Instructions
Simply mix together 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon sea salt, 4 tablespoons organic virgin coconut oil, 6 drops peppermint essential oil, and 2 teaspoons organic cacao powder in a small glass bowl. Then, move it over to food processor to whip it to the consistency required. Store in a sealable glass jar and enjoy!

Note : During winter, the coconut oil tends to solidify. Substitute 2 tablespoon of olive oil with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil)
Facts about Olive Oil: Dr Natasha brushes her teeth with olive oil.  Some people also claim that this can aid in maintaining pearly white teeth.  The most common motivation to use olive oil is it’s ability to help maintain healthy tooth enamel whilst pulling toxins from your mouth and gums.  An Oil pull will also aid further in pulling toxins and should be practiced regularly for good oral hygiene.

Beauty tips: Rosehip oil is better than Botox

Rosehip oil in Summary : It heals, nourishes, and hydrates

According to Huffington Post, the rosehip seed oil is a safer solution compare to Botox. It repairs the skin's surface, restores elasticity and protects against sun and pollution stressors that can lead to wrinkles. It has been used for generations by the Andean Indians of Chile who recognized years ago that Rosehip oil had exceptional healing skin care and hair care benefits. It’s brimming with natural nutrients and vitamins and can be used both externally and taken internally. The former Victoria's Secret Angel Miranda Kerr  and the Aussie actress Rose Byrne both confessed their secret to their glowing healthy skin involves using the rosehip oil.

What is Rose hip oil?
Rosehips are the fruits of the roses (This is the fruit left once the rose has bloomed and lost its petals) and the rosehip oil are extracted from these two type of roses, the wild rose (Rosa Rugosa) or the dog rose (Rosa Canina).

It should be applied to damp skin after cleansing. Like a serum, it is easily absorbed by the skin shouldn't leave behind an oily residue. You will only need a few drops. You can apply your moisturiser over the top of the rosehip oil as most skin types require both oil and moisture to function at optimum health. Try doing this twice a day, morning and evening, for best result.

I have to confess that I am a coffee addict. Coffee is my sunshine and without a cup of coffee to start my day, the world somehow seemed a little gloomy. My love for coffee has inspired me to make this vanilla flavoured coffee pasta. It is so easy to make and you can make a big batch and store it in the freezer. Just swirled it into single-portion nest and freeze it separately using a container. It can last at least a month. DIY Homemade Tumeric Mask for Glowing Skin

As I grow older, I started to think about my well being and I thought to myself it is time for me to use more natural home made products and avoid commercial products if possible. You never know what the manufacturers really put inside the bottle. If I am making them, I can decide on the product that I am putting into my product.

I want to share this incredible face mask that cost you next to nothing but it works wonders. It only requires 2 basic ingredients that you can find in your pantry, turmeric and milk. Turmeric is a good antioxidant, and an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agent. Milk contains lactic acid, which is an alpha hydroxy acid and it exfoliates the skin. Together, these ingredients make wonders to your skin.

Let's get cooking!

Preparation time:
5 minutes or less

Ingredients:
- 1  1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 3 tsp milk
(You can adjust the amount of milk to make the paste more or less thick, but make sure it’s a firm  paste that will stick to your face.  )

Instructions:
- Mix both ingredients in a bowl.
- If your hair is long, tie it up at the back.
- Wear a T-shirt you are not too attached to, in case it gets stained.
- Wash your face with running water and remove all makeup.
- I used my coffee scrub after I washed my face
- Apply the mask evenly all over your face. A spot you don’t want to miss is under the eyes, as turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties help reduce the dark circles, which form as a result of vasoconstriction (narrowing of the vessels).
-Wash it off after 20 minutes. You will see the difference immediately
